Year 7 Literacy & Numeracy Catch-up Premium

The literacy and numeracy catch up funding provides schools with additional funding to support those children who performed below national expectations at KS2 in English and Maths. It is provided to all state funded schools with a Year 7 cohort.

Year 7 Catch Up Premium Grant Funding

The funding has been allocated to enhance our provision in the following areas:

This funding is used to subside the overall costs of a Maths and English nurture group. It is a deliberately small pupil/teacher ratio (typically 1/10) and targeted to the pupils who come to us below age related standards. This group works with specialist Maths and English teachers to develop their overall numeracy and literacy, but also to develop their learner confidence and self-esteem. These small groups enable us to get to know the children behind the data and establish what the barriers to learning may have been. The aim is always to ensure that they make rapid and sustainable progress and join their peers in the mainstream groups where they continue to flourish.

Impact of this Funding

This approach has been used over the last four years at Tarleton Academy, another school within Endeavour Learning Trust and they have found it to be a highly effective use of the funding, which we intend to continue at Burscough Priory Academy. On an annual basis at least 35% of this group have progressed to join their mainstream peers enabling even greater intervention to support the less able in making continued progress. Tarleton Academy's last Ofsted report stated: “The good use of the funding received to help those students who enter Year 7 with lower than expected levels of attainment in literacy, particularly reading, enables them to make rapid progress through creative teaching supported by well-chosen resources".
